Neurotoxins (Dysport and Botox)
Neurotoxins are designed to temporarily reduce the activity resulting in wrinkles production. Over time, lines and wrinkles on the face can be smoothed by limiting muscle contractions. The neurotoxins take about 3-7 days to take effect and last up to 3-4 months. Multiple treatments may be needed to help reduce deeper wrinkles.
Many facial wrinkles result from nerve cells that have been conditioned to tell muscles to contract. Because we often contract muscles in the forehead, around the eyes, and around the mouth, the nerves begin telling the muscles to remain contracted. Botox and Dysport block these signals from the nerves, allowing the muscles to relax and smoothing the wrinkles they cause. Habitual muscle contractions are blocked, but after a short time, the nerve extends new branches to the muscle that allow for voluntary muscle contraction, so you do not lose expressiveness in treated areas.
The most common areas treated with neurotoxins include:
● Crow’s feet
● Glabella (the infamous “11’s”)
● Areas around the lips (smoker lines)
● Forehead lines
● Neck area
● Dimpled Chin
Neurotoxin injections reduce wrinkles and lines on the face caused by aging and hyper-functional muscles.
It usually takes anywhere from 2 to 5 days after treatment for the product to take effect. Full effects may not be seen for 7-14 days, depending on the product and patient.
The neurotoxins Botox and Dysport results generally last about 3 – 4 months, but results will vary depending on the patient.
There is no downtime or recovery time associated with botulinum toxin injections. Patients should be able to resume their normal activities immediately. Avoid massaging or rubbing the treated areas after the wrinkle treatment to avoid causing the botulinum toxin to migrate to another part of the face.
